Glacier Guide: 4 Fan-Favorite Winter Events in Durango

Winter in Durango offers endless fun for Glacier residents to take part in. Nestled between downtown Durango and Purgatory Ski Resort, Glacier gives you easy access to everything going on in and around town. Here are our four favorite events and activities to check out this winter.

Holiday Station

Holiday Station is a lively, ongoing holiday celebration, taking place November 24 through December 31 in Durango. The local community-driven event series showcases the many festivals, cultures, and activities that make the holidays in La Plata County so magical. Check out the full line-up of events here.

The Polar Express Train Ride

All aboard the Polar Express! Now through December 31, Chris Van Allsburg’s award-winning holiday book will come alive during this annual, much-beloved train excursion that’s about 65 minutes in duration. The vintage steam train will depart the Durango Depot for the North Pole to pick up Santa Claus himself, with hot chocolate, sweet treats, readings and more. Snowdown

Snowdown is Durango’s annual winter festival happening from January 26 through February 4, 2024. This long-running event includes fun competitions like the Frying Pan Toss, Outhouse Races, and Snowdown Follies talent show. There’s also live music, food, drink specials at local bars, fireworks and more. Snowdown is a great way to experience some uniquely Durango wintertime revelry.

Durango Independent Film Festival

Movie buffs will want to check out the Durango Independent Film Festival happening February 28 through March 4, 2023. This annual event screens dozens of independent films of all genres. In addition to film screenings, the festival includes workshops, parties and a chance to mingle with filmmakers. It’s a great opportunity to see unique films you won’t find elsewhere.
