Seven Winter Activities Near Glacier

No matter the season, there’s always something exciting taking place at Glacier – and winter is no exception. Transformed into a winter wonderland, Glacier and the surrounding area offers plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Stop by downtown for some holiday shopping or head outdoors for an adventure with the whole family.

Lined with local shops and boutiques, downtown Durango is the perfect place to tackle all of your holiday shopping. The historic downtown district is a Nationally Registered Historic Place and serves as the hub of the city. Stop by Earthbound Trading Company to browse gifts from local artists or check out Christmas in Durango for some Christmas gifts or decor.

Take a Trip to Purgatory Resort

Located just 10 miles away from Glacier, Purgatory Resort comes to life during the winter. The resort, nestled in the San Juan Mountains, offers a plethora of activities, including tubing, skiing or snowshoe tours. You can even make plans to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus on December 22, 2022 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm. 

Go Ice Skating

Lace up your skates and head on over to Chapman Hill Ice Arena. Whether it’s your first time on the ice or your fifth, Chapman Hill is a great place to make memories with loved ones. After a fun afternoon of ice skating, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate from Animas Chocolate and Coffee Company. This Durango staple is known for their decadent hot chocolate and sweet treats, along with a variety of coffee options.

Attend a Christmas Concert

For a family friendly experience, make plans to attend the Bar-D Wranglers Christmas Concert. You can look forward to holiday medleys, both old and new. This festive occasion is taking place December 14 at 7:00pm. 

Embark on The Polar Express Train Ride 

Get in the holiday spirit by climbing aboard The Polar Express Train Ride, put on by Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Guests can look forward to a light show set to holiday music, complete with hot chocolate and snacks. The train ride is available until January 1, 2023, but be sure to reserve your tickets in advance. 

Celebrate the New Year

Get ready to ring in 2023 at the New Year’s Eve Celebration Torchlight Parade and Firework Display. Taking place at Purgatory Resort, the evening consists of seasonal drinks, lively music and a variety of holiday activities. The real showstopper is the impressive fireworks display to celebrate the start of the new year. 

Show Up for Snowdown

A celebrated Durango tradition, the 44th annual Snowdown Durango launches February 1, 2023. The event was originally founded in 1979 as a way to keep spirits high during the cold, long winter. This year’s theme is A Shakespearian Revelry, complete with a variety of family-friendly activities. 

From Shakespeare to train rides through the mountains, you can look forward to a fun-filled winter like none other.
