As we enter late summer here in Durango, Glacier residents find themselves in the perfect position to enjoy the best of festival season. Nestled between downtown Durango and Purgatory, our community offers easy access to the vibrant events that make our region special. From August to October, here’s a guide to the can’t-miss festivals coming up in late summer and early fall.

La Plata County Fair | August 7-11

Kick off August with this beloved local tradition. The La Plata County Fair showcases the best of our community with prize-winning animals, garden produce, local crafts, and delicious food. Glacier residents can easily enjoy the live music, exciting entertainment, and family-friendly atmosphere. It’s a perfect opportunity to connect with neighbors and experience our region’s rich agricultural heritage, all just a short drive from your mountain retreat.

San Juan Brewfest | August 23-24

Kicking off the August festivities is the San Juan Brewfest, a celebration of Colorado’s thriving craft beer scene. This two-day event in downtown Durango features over 50 breweries, live music, and local food vendors. It’s the perfect way to sample the region’s best brews while soaking in the festive atmosphere of a Durango summer day. 

Animas City Night Bazaar | August 28 & September 25

Don’t miss the final two Animas City Night Bazaars of the season. August’s “Full Steam Ahead” at The Animas Alley and September’s “Cultivating Community” at Riverview Elementary Garden transform local spaces into vibrant marketplaces. From 6-9pm and 6-8pm respectively, enjoy local vendors, artisans, and performers. 

Durango Autumn Arts Festival | September 21-22

As summer transitions to fall, this two-day festival showcases the work of over 100 artists from across the country. Stroll through downtown Durango, admiring paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and more. It’s an ideal opportunity to find a unique piece of art to adorn your Glacier home, while enjoying the crisp autumn air and vibrant fall colors that make our region so spectacular this time of year.

Durango Cowboy Gathering | October 2-6

Embrace the Western heritage of our region at this unique event. The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering features poetry readings, musical performances, and art exhibitions that celebrate cowboy culture. It’s a charming and authentic slice of the Old West, right in the heart of modern Durango.

Beat the Heat: Top 5 Swimming Holes Near Glacier

As summer heats up here in Durango, the best way to cool off is by taking a refreshing dip in one of the many pristine creeks, lakes, and rivers surrounding our community. Not sure where to go? Here’s our guide to the top five swimming holes near Glacier, perfect for those scorching days when the golf course just won’t cut it:

1. Animas River at Baker’s Bridge

Just a short drive from Glacier, this deep pool beneath the historic Baker’s Bridge offers crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the San Juan Mountains. The brave can jump from the bridge, while others can relax on the smooth rock outcroppings.

2. Cascade Creek

Located en route to Purgatory, Cascade Creek features a series of small waterfalls and pools. The adventurous can hike upstream to find more secluded spots, while families will appreciate the easily accessible lower pools.

3. Vallecito Creek

East of Durango, Vallecito Creek boasts several swimming holes along its length. The area near the Vallecito Campground is particularly popular, with deeper pools and small beach areas perfect for picnicking.

4. Junction Creek

A local favorite, Junction Creek offers several spots to cool off along the Colorado Trail. The first mile of the trail features multiple access points to refreshing pools, ideal for a quick dip after a hike.

5. Turtle Lake

While technically not a “swimming hole,” this hidden gem near Molas Pass is worth the drive. Its cool, clear waters and stunning alpine setting make it a perfect escape on the hottest summer days.
